In many cases, the couples Fass photographed -- all of them married more than 40 years -- overcame amazing hardships. Robert and Patricia Carey of New York tied the knot in 1965, when interracial marriage was still a federal offense in 16 states. They met while volunteering for a summer community service program called Operation Crossroads to Africa.
